Alexander Fleming: The Accidental Discoverer of Penicillin
Alexander Fleming (1886-1955) was a Scottish physician, microbiologist and pharmacologist who made the accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928. He observed that a mold (Penicillium notatum) had contaminated one of his bacterial cultures, and that the mold had killed off the surrounding bacteria. This led to the development of penicillin as an antibiotic, which revolutionized the treatment of bacterial infections and saved countless lives during World War II. Fleming was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for his discovery.
