Blu-ray Disc Format's ECL Feature for Smooth Playback

ECL (Extended Cut Law) is a feature in the Blu-ray Disc format that allows for more precise control over the playback of video content. It enables the player to adjust the playback speed of the video, allowing for smoother and more precise control over the playback of fast-paced content such as action scenes or sports.

ECL works by allowing the player to specify a "target" frame rate for the video, which is then used to adjust the playback speed of the video in real-time. This allows for finer grained control over the playback speed than traditional constant frame rate (CFR) playback, which can sometimes result in choppy or uneven playback.

For example, if a movie is mastered at 24 frames per second (FPS), but there are scenes that require faster motion, the ECL feature can be used to increase the frame rate to 30 or 40 FPS during those scenes, resulting in smoother and more fluid motion.

ECL is typically supported by high-end Blu-ray players and some TVs with built-in Blu-ray players. It is not commonly found on lower-end players or DVD players.
