Jacksmelt (Acanthostracion navarroensis): Deep-Sea Fish with a Long, Pointed Snout
Jacksmelt (Acanthostracion navarroensis) is a species of fish in the family Acanthomorphidae. It is found in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of California and Baja California, Mexico, where it inhabits rocky areas and kelp forests at depths of 10 to 300 feet (3 to 90 meters). Jacksmelt are small, reaching a maximum length of about 12 inches (30 centimeters), and have a slender, elongated body with a pointed snout and a long, pointed tail. They feed on small fishes, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
