The History and Pride of Being a Jayhawker

A Jayhawker is a resident of the state of Kansas, particularly in the eastern part of the state. The term originated in the mid-19th century as a nickname for supporters of the Kansas Territory, which was established in 1854 with the goal of allowing slavery or not, depending on the vote of the residents. The term "Jayhawker" is derived from the nickname given to the pro-slavery faction in the territory, who were known for their aggressive and violent tactics. Over time, the term came to be applied to all residents of Kansas, regardless of their political beliefs. Today, Jayhawkers are known for their pride in their state and their love of basketball, as the University of Kansas is one of the most successful college basketball programs in the country.
