Gau is a unit of length used in ancient India, equal to 1/4 of an angula or 1.75 inches (4.4 cm). It was used as a standard measure for land measurement and revenue collection during the Mauryan period (322-185 BCE) and later. The word "gau" is derived from the Sanskrit word "gav" meaning "string" or "measure".
