Understanding Kymographs: A Device for Recording Motion Over Time
A kymograph is a device used to record the movement of an object over time. It consists of a pen or stylus that is attached to a lever arm, which is connected to a rolling paper or other recording medium. As the object moves, the pen traces out a line on the paper, creating a graphic representation of the motion. Kymographs were commonly used in the 19th and early 20th centuries to study the movement of animals, including humans, and to analyze the mechanics of machines and other devices. They are still used today in some fields, such as biomechanics and animation, but have largely been replaced by digital recording technology.
