Understanding Meningomyelitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Meningomyelitis is a rare inflammatory disease that affects the protective membranes (meninges) and the spinal cord (myelon). It can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections, autoimmune disorders, and certain medications. Symptoms of meningomyelitis may include fever, headache, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, and loss of sensation or numbness in the arms and legs. Treatment typically involves antibiotics for bacterial infections, steroids to reduce inflammation, and physical therapy to help regain lost function. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve compression on the spinal cord.
