Understanding Nephrectomy: Procedure, Recovery, and Long-term Effects
Nephrectomy is the surgical removal of one or both kidneys. It is typically performed to treat conditions such as kidney cancer, kidney failure, or severe injury to the kidneys.
After a nephrectomy, the remaining kidney(s) will enlarge to compensate for the lost function. However, if both kidneys are removed, the patient will require dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
Nephrectomized refers to the state of having undergone a nephrectomy. It is a term used to describe the surgical procedure and the resulting condition where one or both kidneys have been removed.
