Understanding the Anconeal Muscle and Its Functions

The anconeal (or anconeus) muscle is a small, triangular muscle located in the upper arm, just above the elbow. It is one of the muscles that make up the anterior compartment of the arm.

The anconeal muscle arises from the medial aspect of the humerus (upper arm bone), and runs downwards and laterally to attach to the ulna (lower arm bone) and the radius (forearm bone). It helps to flex the wrist and forearm, and also assists in rotating the forearm so that the palmar surface of the hand faces upwards.

The anconeal muscle is a relatively small muscle, but it plays an important role in the movement of the arm and hand. Injury or strain to this muscle can cause pain and limited mobility in the arm and hand.
