Understanding the Difference Between Night Terrors and Nightmares
Night terrors, also known as sleep terrors, are episodes of intense fear, screaming, and thrashing during deep sleep. They usually occur in children, but can occasionally happen in adults. Children who experience night terrors may be more likely to have a sleep disorder or other underlying medical condition.
Nightmares are dreams that cause strong negative emotions such as fear, anxiety, or sadness. Unlike night terrors, which occur during deep sleep, nightmares typically happen during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep. People who experience nightmares may wake up feeling scared, upset, or disturbed.
It is important to note that both night terrors and nightmares can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, certain medications, sleep disorders, and underlying medical conditions. If you or your child experiences recurring night terrors or nightmares, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and treatment.
