Understanding the Iliohypogastric and Ilioinguinal Nerves
Iliohypogastric (iliopubic) nerve: This nerve arises from the lumbar spine, L1-3, and supplies the muscles of the abdominal wall, specifically the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis. It also supplies sensation to the skin of the lower abdomen and groin.
Ilioinguinal nerve: This nerve arises from the lumbar spine, L1-3, and passes through the inguinal canal, where it can become irritated or compressed, leading to pain in the groin and scrotum. It supplies sensation to the skin of the thigh and inner aspect of the knee.
