Understanding TRH: A Hormone that Regulates Thyroid Function
TRH stands for Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone. It is a hormone produced by the hypothalamus in the brain that stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland. TSH then stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones, which regulate metabolism and growth.
TRH is used as a diagnostic tool to test for hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis function. It is also used to diagnose and monitor thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and thyroid cancer. Additionally, TRH can be used to assess the effectiveness of thyroid hormone replacement therapy in patients with hypothyroidism.
