Unlocking Ectromelic Immortality: A Hypothetical Medical Condition
Ectromelic is a term that was coined by the science fiction author Alastair Reynolds in his novel "The Prefect". It refers to a hypothetical medical condition where a person's body has become so advanced and cybernetically enhanced that they are effectively immortal.
In the context of the novel, ectromelic individuals have undergone extensive surgical and technological enhancements to extend their lifespan indefinitely. They have replaced much of their biological tissue with advanced artificial components, such as nanotechnology-based organs and limbs, and have integrated themselves into a vast network of interconnected computers and databases.
The term "ectromelic" is derived from the Greek words "ekstros" (meaning "outside") and "melikos" (meaning "honey"), and refers to the idea that these individuals have become so advanced that they are essentially "beyond the body" or "outside the flesh". The condition is often referred to as "ectromelic immortality".
