What is a Freshman?
In the United States, a "freshman" is a first-year student at a high school or college. The term is used to describe students who are in their first year of study and have not yet completed any higher education before.
For example, if someone is in the ninth grade at high school, they would be considered a freshman. Similarly, if someone is attending college for the first time and has not yet completed any previous years of study, they would also be considered a freshman.
The term "freshman" is derived from the Latin words "frescus" (meaning "new") and "mans" (meaning "man"), and was originally used to describe new students who were entering their first year of study. Over time, the term has become widely accepted and is now commonly used in educational institutions across the United States to refer to first-year students.
