What is a Hireling?
A hireling is someone who is employed for a short period of time or for a specific task, as opposed to a permanent employee. The term is often used to describe temporary or contract workers.
For example, a company might hire a freelancer or consultant on a project basis, and that person would be considered a hireling. Similarly, a farm might hire seasonal workers to help with harvesting or other tasks, and those workers would also be considered hirelings.
The term "hireling" has been in use since the 14th century, and it comes from the Old English word "hiren," which means "to hire." It is often used in contrast to "employee," which refers to someone who is permanently employed by a company.
