What is a Representative-Elect?

A representative-elect is a person who has been elected to serve as a representative in a legislative body, but has not yet taken office. This term is often used to describe individuals who have won elections for seats in Congress or state legislatures, but have not yet been sworn in or started their terms.

For example, if someone wins an election for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in November, they would be considered a representative-elect until they are sworn in on January 3rd of the following year. During this time, they may attend orientation sessions and other preparatory events to prepare for their new role, but they do not have full voting powers or official duties as a member of Congress.
