What is an Indorsee?
An indorsee is a person who is named as the payee or the recipient of a negotiable instrument, such as a check or a bill of exchange. In other words, an indorsee is the person to whom the instrument is made payable.
For example, if a check is written in favor of "John Doe," then John Doe is the indorsee of that check. If the check is endorsed over to someone else, such as "Jane Doe," then Jane Doe becomes the new indorsee of the check.
The term "indorsee" comes from the fact that the name of the payee or recipient of a negotiable instrument was originally written on the back of the instrument (the "indorsement") rather than on the front. Today, the name of the payee is typically printed on the front of the instrument, but the term "indorsee" remains in use to refer to the person who is entitled to receive payment under the terms of the instrument.
