Woolly Thistles (Caanthus) - Beautiful but Invasive Flowers
Caanthus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, commonly known as woolly thistles. The name "Caanthus" comes from the Greek word "kanthos," meaning "a basket or container," likely referring to the shape of the flower heads.
There are about 20 species of Caanthus, which are native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Asia. They are perennial herbs with thick, woolly leaves and showy, purple or pink flowers. Some species of Caanthus are considered to be invasive weeds in certain regions, as they can outcompete native vegetation and spread quickly.
Caanthus is sometimes confused with the related genus Carduus, which also includes thistles. However, Caanthus species have a more compact, bushy growth habit and smaller flower heads than Carduus species.
